“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” is directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, and stars Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Javier Bardem, Brenton Thwaites, and Kaya Scodelario.  The film is the fifth in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series, and is about Captain Jack Sparrow and his crew searching for the Trident of Poseidon, all while being chased by an undead crew hoping to kill Sparrow before he reaches his destination.

My Thoughts

Look, I saw this movie late, I am reviewing this movie late, and that’s because I have very little to say about much of anything that happened in this film.  The characters are pretty weak, Jack Sparrow has been overdone for the past two films and he is overdone yet again, the visuals are cool but the story is severely lacking. The movie isn’t a total snoozer but it also isn’t very interesting at any point in the plot.  Javier Bardem adds little besides having the worst voice of all-time whenever he says “Jack Sparrow,” and even new directors can’t add a new, fresh flare to reignite any sort of flame into this franchise. The new, young characters could have been intriguing, but they are just as boring, dull, and flat on line delivery as every other character in this series.  I do like Geoffrey Rush a lot still, but he isn’t in the movie long enough to make a real difference.  There are also numerous scenes that are edited to shorten the runtime, but these edits make potentially cool moments feel very lacking and quite confusing. Also, the shtick comedy that these movies now rely on just doesn’t work, not at all.

Conclusion

I don’t care about this series anymore, plain and simple.  Sure, there are a few funny moments and a few cool scenes, but overall the film just put me in this state of meh nearly the entire time that I could not shake.  If you are a huge fan of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series then check it out, otherwise this is yet another mediocre time in a series that has been slightly subpar ever since it’s groundbreaking first film in 2003.
