The Top 10 Brockhampton Songs To Date

BrockhamptonTop10In honor of the release of “Iridescence” this Friday, I wanted to look back at everything that Brockhampton has put out, and rank the very best of the songs from their previous work. The “SATURATION” trilogy was one of the most exciting runs any music group has went on in quite a long time, and to do it all within six months made it all the more exciting.

Since the trilogy, the group has released a handful of singles, and lost a member, Ameer Vann, due to controversy in his personal life. Still, with a new album on the way, I enlisted the help of 11 of the biggest Brockhampton fans I knew to make a collective list of the top 10 songs Brockhampton has released to date. Here’s how the scoring works.

The exact same rules from the Kanye West Top 10 list apply here:

  • Songs ranked first in the list received 1 point, second receives 2 points, etc. all the way to tenth.
  • Songs that were not ranked within a list received a base 15 points
  • The 10 songs with the LOWEST scores made the list.
  • Tiebreaker is highest ranking on any individual list

This was a list that had no clear picks, as you will see in the individual lists shown below, and please feel free to disagree with all of us (or any of us individually through twitter), but here we go, the top 10 Brockhampton songs pre-“Iridescence.”

10.) QUEER

Album: “SATURATION 2”

Score: 137 | Average Ranking: 11.4

Number of Lists: 4 | Highest Ranking: 2

Only landing on a third of the lists, “QUEER” comes in as one of the most popular non-singles of the bunch. The track offers some fantastic beat switches between the verses and chorus, with verses from Matt Champion, Dom McLennon and company bring the heat, while the chorus mellows the tone out in beautiful fashion. Coming near the beginning of the group’s second album in the trilogy, it starts the successor off in the right way.

1999 Wildfire

9.) 1999 WILDFIRE

Album: None (Single)

Score: 133 | Average Ranking: 11.1

Number of Lists: 5 | Highest Ranking: 4

The newest song to make the list, this was the first single (aside from the live performance of “Tonya” on Jimmy Fallon) to release since the removal of Ameer Vann. The track keeps it relatively low key, with the chorus standing out as one of the group’s stickiest to date. The song reaches another level with the transition into Bearface towards the end, really upping the R&B feel made by everything that came before it.

Swamp

8.) SWAMP

Album: SATURATION 2

Score: 133 | Average Ranking: 11.1

Number of Lists: 4 | Highest Ranking: 1

Though on less lists, the ones who loved “SWAMP” really loved it, putting the track as high as number one on the list. This is another track with an iconic chorus, this time from Matt and Kevin Abstract. The beat is plucky and infectious, as are the verses from Merlyn Wood and Dom. This song is most iconic for being the first real time we heard Joba bring out his rap ability, and the group has felt even more diverse since.

Gummy

7.) GUMMY

Album: SATURATION 2

Score: 106 | Average Ranking: 8.8

Number of Lists: 6 | Highest Ranking: 3 (two times)

The third “SATURATION 2” song to make its way on the list, “GUMMY” was the first single released, and ultimately ended up being the opener, both for good for reason. The song starts off with one of the best verses Kevin has given to date, in which he gets deep about his past through calling out the people against him. The chorus here works, as does the fantastic beat, all topped off by a Matt verse that took the whole song to the next level.

6.) RENTAL

Album: SATURATION 3

Score: 105 | Average Ranking: 8.8

Number of Lists: 7 | Highest Ranking: 2 (two times)

Though quite simple and very laid back for the group, “RENTAL” works through its smooth beat and, mostly through Matt’s fantastic rhythm on the track. “Throw me in the fire baby, I’ll survive” is a lyric that stuck in my head days after listening, and though the verses are cut short here, the song works through its terrific production.

junky

5.) JUNKY

Album: SATURATION 2

Score: 99 | Average Ranking: 8.2

Number of Lists: 7 | Highest Ranking: 1 (three times)

Look, I’m going to speak on my personal behalf here, I cannot believe “JUNKY” fell to five. But, even with being the second-most voted for the top, five people didn’t deem it worthy for the top 10, so here we are. Easily one of the most twisted moments for the group, with the verses all dealing with demons of sorts combined with a borderline sadistic beat, and “JUNKY” became a instant favorite immediately. Kevin, Ameer, Merlyn, Matt and Dom bring some of their best verses here, and some of their most lyrically potent.

4.) BLEACH

Album: SATURATION 3

Score: 88 | Average Ranking: 7.3

Number of Lists: 10 | Highest Ranking: 1

Quite possibly the smoothest song the group has released to date, “BLEACH” continues to be a highlight on the group’s third album to this day. This is easily one of the best-produced songs to date from Brockhampton, and the chorus from Ryan Beatty is nothing short of exceptional. This is a catchy, lyrically solid song that will stay in your head for days after listening.

Gold

3.) GOLD

Album: SATURATION

Score: 87 | Average Ranking: 7.2

Number of Lists: 9 | Highest Ranking: 1 (two times)

Speaking of catchy choruses, Kevin’s on “GOLD” is without a doubt the absolute catchiest in the group’s discography. The beat in play on this track here is equally infectious, and Matt’s opening verse is one of the best from the group to date. Dom and Merlyn close the song in equally great fashion, especially with a line like “I feel like Ratatouille when I’m whipping the cheddar,” is in your verse.

STAR

2.) STAR

Album: SATURATION

Score: 79 | Average Ranking: 6.6

Number of Lists: 10 | Highest Ranking: 2 (three times)

Coming in at the runner-up position is the song with all the iconic lines, the song that consists of only three verses and the song that works because of it. One of the most clever concepts the group has ever had for a track, Dom, Ameer and Kevin all use references to their benefit to make “STAR,” one of the funniest and witty songs in recent memory. “Anthony Hopkins I’m eating them raw,” “Nic Cage with the face off, John Travolta when I take off” and “I don’t f**k with no white boys, less the n***a Shawn Mendes” remain iconic, and this remains an absolute staple in Brockhampton’s greatest hits.

Sweet

1.) SWEET

Album: SATURATION 2

Score: 69 | Average Ranking: 5.8

Number of Lists: 10 | Highest Ranking: 1 (four times)

The number one pick, though far from unanimous, between us 12, is “SWEET,” a song that shows a lot of the best that Brockhampton can do. From the sick beat, to Matt’s incredible opening verse, Dom’s equally great one and Merlyn’s even greater freakout bars, this song works on every level. The chorus is nearly as catchy as “GOLD,” and has arguably better verses to back it up. There isn’t one member off their game on this track, and though it wasn’t my personal choice, I fully understand why “SWEET” can be considered the greatest Brockhampton song to date.
