Feed A Dog, 7 Tips For Newbies
Feeding a dog is not something to be overlooked. Our furry friends can’t eat whatever or whatever they want. Therefore, to feed a dog correctly we recommend talking to the vet. Each breed has its peculiarities that affect food: the skin of a greyhound does not allow anything, just like the delicate stomach of a Dachshund or Labradors, who due to their joint problems must ingest a greater amount of omega 3, among other nutrients.
However, there are several things that we must take into account outside of our talk with the vet. In addition to the type of diet, it is important to become familiar with some important aspects of “mealtime.” Below we indicate some tips such as not to feed 2 unknown dogs at the same time or how many times a day it is advisable to feed our animal.
The first thing you have to know is if your animal suffers from any allergies. The most frequent allergies in dogs are caused by food, insect saliva (through bites), inhalation and contact with different allergens.
In the case of diet, they occur when one or more ingredients in the food cause a hypersensitive reaction of the immune system. Dogs that suffer from allergies may present symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, belching, diarrhea, flatulence, loss of appetite, weight loss, lethargy and weakness.
If in your case you are taking care of a dog that is not yours, we recommend that you always follow the instructions of its owner in terms of hours, times a day and amounts of food. Do not introduce anything to his diet that he may not be used to.
2. How many meals a day
This is a topic that is talked about in many forums without reaching a clear conclusion. Indeed, the appropriate response is less difficult than it appears. Feeding a dog several times a day depends on various aspects such as age. This is the kind of thing that needs to be clarified with the vet.
In general, a dog can eat 4 times a day after 2 months of age. From 4 to 6 months, meals are usually reduced to 3. After 6 months, the animal should eat 2 times a day, in the morning and in the afternoon. We insist, this is a general assessment. You have to have the veterinarian to determine the best diet for your pet.
In passing, we clarify another matter. Leaving the food bowl full for the dog to eat whenever he wants is one of the worst things to do. I remember when Tom got home (a dachshund who was 2 months old at the time) he ate as much as we gave him. Until he binged and ended up vomiting. There I learned that dogs eat as much as they can, even if they burst. Therefore, it is not a good idea to give them the opportunity to choose when to eat. They literally can’t stop.
3. Eating together without being friends? NOPE!!
If you are one of those people who does not have enough with a furry and wants to expand the family, you should bear in mind that mealtime can be a conflict. For this reason, it is recommended not to feed 2 unknown dogs at the same time, or at least not in the same place. This advice is even more important for those keepers who take in several strange dogs at the same time.
The reason why it is advisable to take precautions is that there can be problems if one wants to eat the other’s food. Set different times for each one. Ideally, you should remove the bowl afterward if there is food left.
4. Attention to the "water jug"
The bowl where we put water for our pet may not look dirty or, rather, it takes longer to show visible signs of dirt. That does not mean that it does not have to be cleaned. You have to wash it every day, just like we wash the glasses in our house. It is important to change the water several times a day, so that it is always fresh and clean.
5. What monkeys are the cubs, but what do they eat?
Up to 2 years no dog is an adult. Still, each breed goes from puppy to teenager at a different rate. So, once again, we will speak in a general way. A puppy has a very different diet than an adult or adolescent dog. The little furry should take breast milk or artificial formula until 8 weeks of age.
Milk is important at this stage, as it is the correct way to get colostrums. It is a compound that strengthens the immune system of the animal. Some dogs require extra vitamins to be given during this period. There already among the vet, who will prescribe the most convenient? Something that can also be done is mix the milk with special puppy food. The feed becomes softer and easier to eat, while drinking milk.
6. Be careful!! Foods to avoid
There are foods that dogs should never eat, as is the case with chocolate. The list of harmful breaths does not end there. You should avoid that your dog drinks milk, since, in adulthood, these animals stop secreting the enzyme that is responsible for the digestion of lactose. It is not life threatening, but it can cause stomach problems such as vomiting or diarrhea. This also applies to cheese.
Onion thiosulfate can cause anemia in dogs. This component deteriorates the red blood cells of these animals, which can weaken them. Serious onion problems occur if you take a large amount of it, but why are we going to risk it, right? Garlic causes the same effect, which, in addition to anemia, can also cause kidney failure due to the loss of hemoglobin.
The yeast becomes a toxic one time is in the stomach of your pet. This compound generates gases that are harmful to the body of dogs. Ingesting yeast can lead to vomiting, lethargy, and abdominal pain. The same with the salt. If you are one of those who like to cook some homemade food for your dog, do it without salt, since the high content of this compound can cause seizures and vomiting.
7. Human food suitable for dogs
Just as there are forbidden foods, there are also others that we eat and that we can share with our furry ones. The best known is cooked chicken. This food is a good way to put protein in our pet’s diet.
The carrots are good for the teeth of dogs, plus they provide a good amount of fiber. Similarly, several experts indicate that oatmeal is beneficial for older dogs with problems when it comes to “going to the bathroom.” Still, on a personal basis I am not entirely clear, since oats, if not careful, can contain a percentage of sugar that can be too high for dogs.
Although they can eat these foods, it is usually best to buy the feed that best suits the needs of your dog. We clarify this in this post on dog food.
